The Sarakatsans of Epirus meet in the village of Skamneli (Gyftokampos) on the first weekend of August every year. There is an exhibition site known as “Sarakatsaniki Stani” (the Sarakatsans’ pen). It has a surface area of 1.6 hectares and was created by the Brotherhood of the Sarakatsans of Epirus. It is an exact representation of a typical shepherd settlement. Shepherds used to head up to the mountains to graze their sheep in summer. It includes pens, storerooms, lodgings, a school housed in a hut and milk manufacturing plants. This area provides a wonderful backdrop for a lavish two-day party strongly connected with the long tradition of the Sarakatsans.
