Evritania is famous for its historical tradition and its wonderful natural environment. It constitutes one of the few European regions that have such a clean environment and fresh atmosphere. Its capital is the exquisite town of Karpenissi. There are important settlements such as Megalo Chorio, which hosts a remarkable folklore museum, Mikro Chorio – partly buried by a landslide – the historic region of Agrafa, Fragista, etc. Koryschades is one of the most important tourist destinations in the wider area. It has been proclaimed protected, as it boasts a long history. More specifically, it was the seat of the first government of national resistance. The school of the village has been transformed into a museum..
The most dominant mountains of the region are Mt Tymphristos (also called Velouchi), the Agrafa Mountain range, Mt Kaliakouda and Mt Panaetoliko on the borders with the prefecture of Aetoloacarnania. Some of the longest rivers flowing through the prefecture include: the Acheloos, the Agraphiotis, the Megdovas, the Karpenissiotis, the Krikelopotamos and the Trikeriotis. The entire prefecture is suitable for outdoor sports activities. You can trek on or climb its slopes, try canoeing/kayaking on its rivers and skiing on its snow-white slopes. Moreover, it is worthwhile to visit the monasteries and churches the prefecture is dotted with. In the early nineties, Evritania was designated by UNESCO as one of the five purest ecosystems on our planet.
