The mountain village of Therisso boasts a history that is lost in the mists of time. In every nook and cranny of the municipality, tourists can feel the smell of history. The village of Agia played an important role during the periods of Venetian and Turkish occupation. Furthermore, in 1905 Eleutherios Venizelos led the Cretans’ revolution against the governor of Crete, Prince George. Eleutherios Venizelos and his compatriots convened a National Assembly at Therisso and proclaimed the political union of Crete with the rest of Greece.
Therisso is surrounded by a breathtaking natural environment consisting of vast orange and olive groves. There are also age-old churches, which is proof positive of the perpetual timelessness of Christian belief. In the wider region of the municipality of Therisso you can see a desolate church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its sanctuary and its pillars show that Christian worship is traced back to thousands of years ago. Situated in the municipality of Therisso, the lake of Agia is a wonderful wetland complex providing a habitat for rare bird species.
