Akronafplia was composed of three castles situated on different levels. It is built at the foot of the rock of Palamidi and was linked to it by a secret pass. According to Pausanias, the peninsula of Akronafplia was fortified as early as the 2nd century BC. Historical sources show that the hill on which the acropolis was built was inhabited by the Carians, the Phoenicians and the Egyptians before the flourishing of Greek culture in this region.
Its walls have a height of 85 m, a width of 400 m and a length of 900 m. The first wall was constructed in the 3rd century BC. Today you can only see its remains. Later, a fort was built by the Franks. The Venetians completed its fortification. Below the acropolis, on the northwest side of the peninsula, the Venetians built a fort known as Castello del Torrione (or Toro for short). It had five cannons which were called “the five brothers”. In the last 25 yeas, some of the old buildings of the acropolis have been demolished and replaced by hotels.
