Tourists have the chance to live a unique experience: the carrying in procession of Jesus Christ’s portable Holy Sepulchre through the stone-paved narrow streets of the medieval city of Monemvasia. The atmosphere is reverent; the procession is followed by local people with white candles and psalmodies echo on the rock of Monemvasia.
All the services of the season are held at the church of Elkomenos Christos (Christ in chains) which is adorned by wonderful post-Byzantine icons. According to tradition, on Easter Sunday afternoon, at the precincts of the church, the locals must burn Judas, a human effigy made of wood and straw and bearing explosives.
