Saint Mucius was tortured in ancient Perinthus (later called Heraclea, present-day Marmaraereğlisi). In 1913, the Turks pillaged the village of Lefkassio and burnt it down. The church of Saint Mucius which adorned the village was consequently destroyed. Only his icon survived. The Greeks, who were forced to leave Eastern Thrace, decided to transport the saint’s icon to the place where they settled, the village of Nerofraktis. The icon was desecrated by the Turks; you can still today see the bullet holes it is pockmarked with as well as the damage it has suffered by the Turkish fire attacks. Saint Mucius, the patron saint of farmers and Thracian people, is commemorated in the municipal department of Nerofraktis on 11 May every year. His icon is carried in procession around the village on the eve of the feast, after the Vespers service, to the accompaniment of the municipal philharmonic orchestra. Various folklore events – including traditional dance performances – are organised by the cultural clubs of the municipality.
